Open Call: Games & Rules

The Toe Rag invites contributions for our forthcoming Autumn/Winter 2024 issue, in collaboration with Minor Attractions, on the theme: GAMES & RULES.

For this collaborative edition, we will be expanding our print run to 30,000 magazines, and launching the issue with a party at Minor Attractions, this year hosted at Fitzrovia’s Mandrake Hotel. The magazines will be distributed throughout London’s Frieze Week (8-13th October 2024) – at Frieze, Frieze Masters and Minor Attractions – as well as through our usual non-profit/independent stockists. Jacob Barnes and Jonny Tanna, directors of Minor Attractions, will serve as collaborative editors for this edition, considering the games and rules through which the fair exists and reimagines exhibitional contexts.

Games exist to scaffold play, where invention and imagination are set against rules and regulation. They are at once innocent and very much serious.

From politics and culture to language and the arts, games offer a critical tool to grapple with the machinery of the modern world. Games are forms of world building: while they may reproduce the codes and norms that structure our everyday lives, they also offer environments to test and break them.

This issue invites contributors to consider questions surrounding games and rules. Why do we impose rules on the freedom of play? How do rules and games order our lives? What would it mean to use games to analyse our political, cultural and economic regimes? How do rules create the necessary tensions for artistic transgressions and encounters?

We consider all forms of nonfiction, as well as fiction, poetry or texts that fall in between. To submit to our Open Call, please send proposals of max 300 words to submissions@thetoerag.com, along with a short bio and a writing sample, either published or unpublished, by Friday 23rd August. For arts reviews, please just send a bio and writing sample, expressing your interest in reviewing for us closer to publication in the autumn.

We look forward to hearing from you!
